Polo Club Granted National Audubon Sanctuary StatusAugust 30, 2017
If you’re a regular on the Timothy Freeland-designed Championship fairways at The Polo Club Boca Raton, you’ve noticed a wide variety of birds when playing on the golf course. After more than two years of careful strategic planning and implementation of the eco-friendly golf courses, the Audubon International recognized the country club with Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status.
In 2015, the prestigious country club worked diligently to create a golf course with the environment in mind—a program they had wanted to put in place for several years. With a solid support system in place, they crafted an environmentally-friendly golf course, setting the standard for others around the world. The Polo Club of Boca Raton understood that golf courses have the potential to provide the following positive effects on the environment:
- Preserve areas consisting of shrubs, trees, and natural grasses
- Create wildlife sanctuaries
- Dense turf protects soil from wind and water erosion
- Improve surrounding community aesthetics
- Retain and remove impurities from rainwater and runoff
- Improve air quality and moderates temperature
- Restore natural balance and efficiency
- Protect water resources

Polo Club Granted National Audubon Sanctuary Status
The Polo Club opted to go with a five-year strategy. It was understood that a sequence of steps must be completed to attract more wildlife to the region. Food, water, cover, and space essentially determined whether the Polo Club would be able to enhance and improve the quality of wildlife. However, the first task was to record every plant and animal found on their real estate in an effort to identify the resident species.
Around 30 birdhouses were installed on and around the golf courses. Pesticide usage was significantly reduced, while a nutrient management program has been introduced to manage runoff pollution. Thus, improving water quality not only in the immediate surroundings but also extending throughout Palm Beach County. Responsibly maintained golf courses like The Polo Club’s act as filters, creating storm water runoff that is actually cleaner than the waterways it eventually flows into.
The luxurious South Florida country club is proud of the work accomplished and is dedicated to improving the lives of its community members while doing their part to improve the environment. The solid effort put in by the Polo Club team has produced homes for numerous species of local wildlife, maintaining the beauty and high activity levels of the community.
